Irelands Golf Courses Ranked Among Worlds Best
Ireland"s golf courses ranked among world"s best by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Ireland could be the next holiday destination of choice for golf fans, after eight of its courses were ranked among the top 100 in the world outside the United States.
The group includes number one Royal County Down, which boasts a location south of Belfast overlooking Dundrum Bay.
Golf Digest magazine - America"s number one distributed sports title - asked more than 6.5m readers to name their favourite playing locations around the world.
While Royal County Down beat venues such as St Andrews" Old Course, Royal Melbourne and Valderrama in Spain, Portmarnock Golf Club near Dublin was ranked 12th in the poll and Dunluce in Royal Portrush was 13th.
David Boyce, Tourism Ireland"s head of business and sports tourism, said the survey results provide recognition for the destination"s efforts to promote itself to golf enthusiasts.
"We have some of the best and most well-known courses … anywhere in the world, but one of the joys of Ireland is that we also have some lesser-known clubs that are equally as enjoyable," he added.
About 7.4m foreign visitors came to Ireland in 2011, 7% more than the previous year.
