Inflight connectivity provider Gogo has signed a deal with SES, a global satellite operator, with the aim of boosting access to high-speed broadband on commercial aircraft.
The partnership will use current and planned SES multi-beam satellites over the continental United States, the Atlantic Ocean and Europe.
Gogo said the initiative intends to provide "reliable and seamless" coverage to allow airlines to meet passenger demand for high-quality, high-speed internet during flights.
Michael Small, the company"s president and chief executive officer, said: "With the addition of a trusted satellite operator and Ku-band connectivity solution, Gogo is well positioned to provide a broad range of airlines and aircraft with a variety of technology solutions."
SES described the deal as a "groundbreaking alliance" that represents a major milestone for commercial carriers as well as travellers.
The technology is set to be available on international fleets operating transatlantic routes, as well as regional planes flying in Europe and the US.
Gogo already offers web access on services provided by carriers such as Delta, Air Canada and American Airlines.
