Ski season begins in New Zealand by Cheap Flights Booker UK
The winter holiday season is now officially underway in New Zealand, with the first two ski areas recently opening for business.
Coronet Peak in Queenstown and Canterbury"s Mount Hutt have started to welcome skiers and snowboarders, while further openings are scheduled for later this week.
Hamish McCrostie, ski area manager at Coronet Peak, said snow conditions at the resort are currently "fantastic".
He explained: "We"ve received about 20 cm of natural snow in the build-up to opening but we"ve been able to open with a 35 cm average base thanks to machine snow."
Meanwhile, approximately 1,400 skiers and boarders headed to Mount Hutt for the first day on the slopes.
Treble Cone, the largest ski resort on New Zealand"s South Island, is due to open on 28 June.
A new trail map that highlights the different parts of the 550-hectare mountain near Wanaka has been produced to help skiers for the 2012 season.
