iPhone users warned of foreign rates by Cheap Flights Booker UK
iPhone users have been told to take "smart steps" before jetting off abroad this summer.
Holidaymakers could be bombarded with high iPhone bills if they fail to tell their network operators they are travelling abroad, according to iLounge.
Jeremy Horwitz, editor-in-chief of the Apple monitoring website, warned that Wi-Fi connection was the iPhone"s only free device and high foreign rates could be charged for voice calls, text messaging and internet usage.
He said: "Unless you are renting a Wi-Fi service for your hotel room or at an internet cafe, there will be no iPhone-specific charge for using Wi-Fi abroad.
"Contacting your cellular service provider is a smart first step if you plan to use the device overseas."
Outgoing roaming calls abroad are currently charged by the second after the first 30 seconds and incoming calls are charged per second from the start, according to EUROPA, the portal site of the European Union.
The issues of phone roaming charges were first addressed in 2007 by the EU which resulted in a fall of 70 per cent in voice roaming calls.
