Ian Bradley, a spokesman for the association, said that holiday hotspots such as Spain and Greece have the flexibility to cater for family needs and offer low prices for flights and accommodation.
He made his comments following the release of booking figures by Monarch Airlines which showed that its top-selling destinations this summer are the Costa Blanca, Crete and Sharm el Sheikh.
"They"re fairly mature destinations and they do cater to families quite well," said Mr Bradley.
"Generally speaking there is normally very good capacity to these places, so you can get fairly good prices in terms of accommodation and flights."
Other destinations in the Monarch top ten this summer include Fuerteventura, Larnaca and Rhodes.
According to a recent survey by AITO and Wanderlust magazine, 77% of British people will be travelling at least as much this year as they did in 2008.
