Abta: APD rise will hurt regional airports by Cheap Flights Booker UK
Travel industry association Abta has warned the government that its planned increase in air passenger duty (APD) will damage regional airports.
The tax is set to be raised on 1 November, making it more expensive for travellers to catch flights from the UK.
Abta said that airlines may reconsider some of their routes from regional airports following the APD increase, with some carriers already axing services and citing the planned tax hike as a major factor in their decision.
Mark Tanzer, chief executive of the travel association, said: "Regional airports are very vulnerable to the negative effect of the government"s planned APD increases.
"We urge the government to rethink these increases as they will place even more pressure on parts of the country already struggling with the worst recession in living memory."
Earlier this year, a similar flight tax in Holland was abandoned as a result of the damaging effect it was having on the country"s economy.
The British government claims that the income from APD will be used to fund environmental projects and tackle the problem of climate change.
