Singapore Airlines has successfully completed a multi-sector demonstration flight that achieved fuel savings of over ten tonnes and a 33-tonne cut in carbon emissions.
The carrier claims that the Boeing 747-400 service from Los Angeles to Singapore via Tokyo was one of the most environmentally efficient flights over the North Pacific.
While it may have felt like a typical journey to the passengers onboard, they were in fact part of an "important chapter in civil aviation", according to the airline.
The company worked with aviation authorities in the US, Japan and Singapore to guarantee optimal air traffic conditions, which enabled a 6% reduction in fuel consumption during the flight.
Gerard Yeap, Singapore Airlines" senior vice-president of flight operations, said: "The route an aircraft takes, the altitude at which it flies and the weather it encounters all affect the amount of fuel it burns and the carbon dioxide emitted.
"Managing this effectively and in real time is therefore very important, for the operating carrier and the environment."
The service from Los Angeles was the first multi-sector demonstration flight to be operated under the Asia and Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions.
