Alaska selected as world"s top cruise destination by Cheap Flights Booker UK

A panel of travel writers and industry experts have named Alaska the world"s best cruise destination.

The North American region was selected for its "incredible bays, dazzling glaciers and exotic wildlife", according to news and reviews site Cruise Critic.

Alaska was ranked ahead of the Galapagos, the Arctic, the Antarctic Peninsula and the Black Sea, which completed the top five.

Venice, the Mediterranean and the Middle East were also singled out for praise.

One of the experts, Telegraph cruise correspondent Jane Archer, said: "One of the best things about cruising is the diversity of places you can visit on a cruise ship.

"There are all the iconic cities in the Mediterranean and Baltic, which attract huge numbers of cruisers, but then you can also get way off the beaten track, discovering remote and exotic places and seeing sights that non-cruisers can only dream about."

The panel were asked to name their favourite destinations by organisers of the Cruise Show, the UK"s only exhibition dedicated to this sector of the travel industry.

London"s Olympia will provide the venue for the event on 27 and 28 March.
