Jonathan Tourtellot, geo-tourism editor of National Geographic Traveler magazine, stressed the importance of local authorities focusing on the "geographical character" of a destination and the well-being of its residents.

Speaking to delegates at the 11th annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development, Mr Tourtellot said that regions offering a genuine and distinctive experience are likely to be the most successful.

"Increasingly, leisure travellers want authenticity, experiences. Quality of place is a selling point," he commented.

"Destinations that think of the whole place as the tourism product will rally support for good stewardship."

Mr Tourtellot claimed that the majority of modern travellers are looking for experiences that can be divided into three broad categories - relaxation, authenticity and entertainment.

National Geographic Traveler recently carried out a survey which found that 74% of American holidaymakers are in favour of geo-tourism.
