Heathrow Receives Carbon Trust Standard
Heathrow receives Carbon Trust Standard by Cheap Flights Booker UK
London Heathrow has received the Carbon Trust Standard, the world"s first award that recognises genuine improvements in carbon efficiency.
Airport operator BAA revealed that the hub was given the accolade after saving enough energy between January 2007 and December 2009 to power more than 6,300 homes for a year.
The base improved its environmental efficiency by nearly 12%, which means that 12% less carbon was emitted for every pound of income.
It is one of more than 350 UK organisations that have received the Carbon Trust Standard.
BAA chief executive Colin Matthews said: "There is no silver bullet to improving carbon efficiency, but through a great team effort we are delighted to have obtained recognition for the progress we have made.
"This is the first step on a long road to helping the government meet the strict environmental targets which also form a core part of Heathrow"s strategy."
Heathrow is expected to make further carbon reductions this year, through initiatives such as careful management of heating, modernised lighting systems, waste recycling and efficient operation of lifts, escalators and baggage conveyors.
