Qatar Airways named airline of the year by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Qatar Airways received the top prize at this year"s Skytrax World Airline Awards, where it was named "airline of the year".

The Doha-based carrier beat 2008 winner Singapore Airlines to the accolade, while Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Thai Airways completed the top five.

Akbar Al Baker, chief executive of Qatar Airways, noted that the operator was relaunched in 1997 with the aim of reaching the "pinnacle" of the industry.

"At Qatar Airways we always aim at doing the best in everything we do. To be considered as the top airline in the world is a huge achievement and a very rewarding moment in Qatar Airways" history," he added.

"I also want to thank our customers for their positive response, loyalty and appreciation of our product."

Skytrax named Turkish Airlines the best carrier in Europe this year, while Emirates was recognised for the quality of its inflight entertainment offering.

British Airways picked up the "best business class lounge" award for its Galleries facility at London Heathrow.
