Brits Behaving Better Abroad
Brits "behaving better abroad" by Cheap Flights Booker UK
UK travellers appear to be showing better behaviour abroad, with fewer people getting into trouble during their trips, according to figures released by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).
The government agency published a report showing that the number of Britons arrested overseas has fallen by more than 10% over the past year.
Drug-related arrests have decreased even more substantially, dropping by almost 20% in the last 12 months.
The FCO welcomed the positive trends but stressed there is still plenty of room for improvement in terms of Brits" behaviour abroad.
Minister for Europe David Lidington said: "We work hard to warn British nationals about the consequences of breaking the law abroad so it is really encouraging to see the overall number of cases of arrests and drug arrests falling.
"But last year there were still 5,700 arrests of British nationals overseas."
Mr Lidington also stressed that the FCO cannot get UK travellers out of jail, but will try to ensure their safety and guarantee they get a fair trial.
The government office is currently running the Know Before You Go campaign, which encourages planning and preparation to help Britons avoid preventable problems during trips abroad.
