Spain sees "surge" in British arrivals by Cheap Flights Booker UK

Spain"s national tourist board has announced that the country saw a "surge" in British arrivals between January and September 2011.

More than 11m UK travellers visited the nation during the period, marking a year-on-year increase of 9.2%.

The strong figure means that 2011 is on course to be one of the best years ever for UK tourism to Spain.

During the peak summer season of June to September, some 6.7m Britons visited the European nation, compared to 6.2m in the same period in 2010.

In September alone, arrivals climbed by 11.4% year-on-year.

Spanish island destinations proved highly popular among UK travellers in the first nine months of 2011, with the Balearics and the Canaries capturing 24.3% and 23.7% of the tourist market respectively.

The southern community of Andalucia, which encompasses Seville, Malaga, Granada and other big cities, was the top mainland region for holidaymakers.

Nearly two-thirds (61%) of UK consumers visiting Spain between January and September stayed in hotels, while more than a third (36%) opted for package holidays.
