BAs Parent Company Buys Bmi
BA"s parent company buys bmi by Cheap Flights Booker UK
International Airlines Group (IAG), the holding company of British Airways (BA) and Iberia, has reached a deal with Lufthansa to acquire bmi.
The companies agreed on a price of £172.5m for IAG to buy bmi"s mainline business, one of three distinct parts of its operation along with bmi regional and bmibaby.
Willie Walsh, chief executive of the purchasing company, said the deal will provide a number of benefits, including the opportunity for the group to expand its slot portfolio at London Heathrow and consequently launch new long-haul flight routes.
He also stressed that the arrangement will be good for the UK, as IAG will maintain a "comprehensive" domestic schedule including services to Belfast.
"Customers will benefit from access to new destinations, more convenient schedules, enhanced frequent flyer benefits and greater investment than had been possible for loss-making bmi," added Mr Walsh.
The bmi mainline operation uses Airbus planes to operate flights to locations in the UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa.
IAG"s plans to purchase the business are subject to clearance from the European Commission and other bodies.
